A FOURTEEN month old toddler has died in a freak accident in Wexford after apparently tumbling while playing.

Gardaí confirmed the incident, which happened on Tuesday, and that it was being treated as a tragic accident.

“Gardai in Wexford are investigating the sudden death of an infant male who was pronounced dead at Wexford General Hospital yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon after being brought from Clonroche,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Gardai are preparing a file for the coroner. It is not believed to be suspicious. No further details are available.”

It is understood the toddler sustained serious head and neck injuries in the fall as he was playing.

It’s believed he tumbled over while playing, and was found by a shocked adult.

The emergency services were immediately alerted and an ambulance raced to the scene.

The toddler had lost consciousness and paramedics worked to stabilise his condition as he was being transferred to Wexford hospital.

Tragically, despite desperate efforts by doctors to revive the child, he was pronounced dead shortly after admission.

Wexford Coroner’s Office was notified and a file will now be prepared for an inquest to be held next year.

Clonroche locals admitted they have been left heartbroken by the tragedy.

“Everyone is stunned – no one could believe the news,” one local said.

Dozens of people arrived throughout the day to express their sympathies with the family, who are well-known and well respected within the area.

Councillor John Fleming said everyone in the tightknit area was doing their best to support the family of four involved.
